Conquering the promised land Part 2
Greetings, friend!
But some of the people of the land was very canny... The Gibeonites deceived the Israelites. When the Joshua realized deception it was too late. So the Gibeonites became the slaves of the Israelites until their time would run out on Judgment Day. The enslavement was better than the curse of breaking a covenant.
The king of Jerusalem became alarmed at this and formed a treaty with four kings of the southern part of the promised land to attack Gibeon hoping that the combined forces would be able to destroy both the Gibeonites and the Israelites, but they did not take into account the army of the Creator fighting with the Israelites...
In the end Joshua commanded the sun to stand still for almost a whole day in order for the fight to be completed before the day ran out.
The five kings that made the treaty fled to a cave at Makkedah. While Joshua were still fighting, the kings were locked up and guarded in the cave. After the fight, Joshua summoned the kings to appear in front of him and sentenced them to death by hanging. At sunset the bodies were buried in the same cave they went to hide. The five cities where burnt to the ground and their people killed for all their sins that they committed. And so the whole areas controlled by them became the possessions of the Israelites.
The northern kings made a treaty too and the same happened to them.
Still, despite the large areas conquered by the Israelites, large sections where still in the hands of the enemies by the time Joshua need to move to his eternal home. During one of his last speeches he divided the land among the tribes and assigned the cities of refuge. During his last meeting with the leaders he renewed the covenant with Creator that was made at the mountain of GOD.
Joshua was buried in the promised land. Joseph's bones were also buried at Shechem on the ground that belonged to Abraham. The high priest appointed by the Creator also died and his son took over his duties.
