David, prophet and second king of Israel (3)
Greetings, friend!
After a long reign David's children rebelled against him near the end of his life.
Adonijah decided to take over while his father is weak and old. He was David's second son, but obviously a spoiled brat as David never really disciplined him. He conspired with Joab, his father's general, and one of the current priests, but not the prophet Nathan, the high priest, his father's charioteers and his father's bodyguards. He had himself anointed in front of the high officials, but not those who oppose him.
Nathan came and tell Bathsheba, the wife of David and mother of Solomon about it. Bathsheba went to David and reminded him that the Creator told them that Solomon is the next king, as the Creator did not find favor with neither Adonijah nor Absalom, the oldest son of David, but that Adonijah had himself anointed king. Nathan was there to confirm it. David arranged for a crowning ceremony for Solomon.
Solomon was crowned king while his father was still alive as David was too weak and old to reign. Adonijah feared for his life and fled to the burnt offering altar's horns. Solomon granted him a conditional amnesty. He rebelled shortly after that and the amnesty expired and he was killed for his conspiracy.
Solomon's throne was established by his wisdom and his prophetic anointment, even while his father was still alive. More about that tomorrow.
